TOSYALI RELEASES ITS SECOND SUSTAINABILITY REPORT

Turkey's leading green steel producer, Tosyalı, released its second sustainability report that was created in accordance with GRI standards. Tosyalı prevented approximately 281 thousand tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from its operations in Turkey by reducing emissions by 21% compared to the previous year according to 2022 Sustainability Report. "We will continue to inspire the whole world for sustainable living as one of the world's leading green steel producers with our investments in technology, innovation, digitalization, clean energy sources such as solar and hydrogen, circular economy" stated Tosyalı Holding Chairman Fuat Tosyalı, adding that they have begun to see the positive results of their sustainability investments.

Türkiye’s green steel producer Tosyalı, recently released its second sustainability report, in accordance with the GRI standards. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the sustainability initiatives undertaken within 2022. It highlights the activities carried out in three key impact areas: "Carbon-Free Steel," "Responsible Ecosystem Management," and “Future of Business.”

In 2022, Tosyalı prevented the emission of 281 thousand tonnes of greenhouse gases

According to the report, Tosyalı's operations in Türkiye resulted in a 26% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity, calculated considering both Scope-1 and Scope-2 emissions in 2022. Additionally, Tosyalı prevented approximately 281 thousand tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from its operations in Türkiye by reducing emissions by 21% compared to the previous year. Tosyalı's efforts in various areas, including zero waste, circular production, and recycling, have enabled it to achieve a recycling rate of 99.9% for non-hazardous waste in its operations in Türkiye.

Fuat Tosyalı, Chairman of Tosyalı Holding, stated that they have begun to see the benefits of their sustainability investments. "As Tosyalı, we believe that carbon-free, green steel production is possible and we continue to make investments that create value for this.  All of the investments we make in both new and existing facilities are driven by sustainability. We design productive and effective plant infrastructures that use renewable energy, consume less water and energy, and emit less carbon. We employ a product-based approach to calculate our emissions and get valıdation for them with international certificates. We are prepared for the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which will begin in 2026 as a part of the EU Green Deal, thanks to our green steel products. In this report, we have calculated our Scope 3 emissions for the first time, following Scope-1 and Scope-2, indicating our commitment to reducing emissions in all of our business processes. We will continue to inspire the whole world for sustainable living as one of the world's leading green steel producers with our investments in technology, innovation, digitalization, clean energy sources such as solar and hydrogen, circular economy” he said.

Despite higher production, the water consumption was reduced by 11%

Tosyalı continues to implement numerous water-saving initiatives, such as closed-circuit systems, various discharge techniques, and the use of cooling towers to re-cool process water. Despite the increase in production, the company was able to reduce its water consumption by 11% in 2022 as a result of these projects.

Local producers constitute 90% of Tosyalı’s supplier base

Tosyalı has been growing and expanding its supplier network; in 2022, the total number of suppliers increased by 46% compared to the previous year. Given that it places a high priority on supporting the development of the region where it operates, Tosyalı increased the number of local suppliers by over 40% in 2022 compared to the previous year. With this significant rise, 90% of Tosyalı’s suppliers were local producers.

Social investments also focus on sustainability

Tosyalı continues to dedicate high amount of resources to social investments as it sees crucial responsibility of the group. With the idea that the prerequisite for being a good company is to leave a better world to future generations, it prioritizes social projects that will add value to social life. With this understanding, Tosyalı made numerous social investments in 2022 and hosted young artists at Contemporary Istanbul through the "Artist in Residence" (Guest Artist) program as part of its sustainability-focused partnership with the Contemporary Istanbul Foundation to upcycle scrap waste into artistic creations.

The employee engagement reached 74%

Tosyalı continues to invest in the training and development of its human resources, which it sees as its most valuable asset for the future of its business and sector. By using this strategy, Tosyalı increased the total number of training hours for its employees by approximately 21% in 2022 compared to the previous year. It increased the number of OHS training hours per employee by 58% compared to the previous year. Tosyalı continues to act with the awareness that creating a productive, innovative and open-to-development work environment will increase the sense of belonging and commitment. With this understanding, Tosyalı carefully evaluates the suggestions and requests from its employees. In this context, the company implemented many of the suggestions received from its employees in the Human Resources Suggestion System in 2022. With all these works carried out by Tosyalı, its employee engagement score reached 74%, exceeding the pre-pandemic period.
