TOSYALI HOLDING BREAKS NEW GROUND IN THE WORLD WITH GREEN STEEL PRODUCTION

With its sustainability-focused change and transformation movement, Tosyalı Holding, the world's largest producer of green steel, continues to realize the first green steel production projects in history. With its projects aimed at using solar energy and hydrogen in production, Tosyalı Holding, which invests billions of dollars in new facilities worldwide for value-added green steel production, sets new standards globally. "We are making huge investments focused entirely on green steel production in one of the most important sectors of the global industry, such as steel," stated Fuat Tosyalı, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tosyalı Holding. In order to produce steel that is carbon-free, we are completely renovating our current facilities. We are implementing the largest solar power plant project in the world, with an installed capacity of 215 MW, with a 120 million dollar investment. We aim to use 50% of our total electricity consumption by 2025 to come from our own production through planned SPP investments. We will be one of the few businesses in the world to go entirely to hydrogen with zero carbon emissions during production thanks to the studies we have started. In our long-term journey that we started with the phrase "Tosyalı for Sustainable Life," we are striving to inspire everyone by setting new standards for the production of green steel and exporting positive examples to every country in the world."

With almost 40 facilities and 15,000 employees across three continents, Tosyalı Holding, Turkey's leading global steel producer, remains one of the most exemplary and emulated groups globally. Its change and transformation initiative is centered around sustainability.

After years of investing in sustainability, Tosyalı Holding is still implementing the largest and first green steel production-focused projects globally. Through technology, innovation, and R&D studies, Tosyalı Holding has implemented over 100 sustainability projects in the last few years and lowered the carbon emissions of its steel plant by 30%.

With its projects for the use of solar energy and hydrogen in production, Tosyalı Holding, which has invested billions of dollars in new facilities for qualified and environmentally friendly steel production worldwide, is setting new standards in the industry.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tosyalı Holding, Fuat Tosyalı, said: "Riding a bicycle is similar to sustainability; you can't stop and refuel."

Tosyalı Holding Chairman Fuat Tosyalı stated: "Iron and steel is with us at every point of our lives, emphasizing that the iron and steel industry is one of the most critical sectors globally and that sustainability investments to be made here can trigger a major change despite their significant costs." In our infrastructure, superstructure, cars, white goods, electronics, and a host of other tools. We say that "if we change, the world changes" for this reason. We at Tosyalı Holding have long since made sustainability our top priority because we are conscious of this and our responsibility. For the following five years, sustainability will also be at the top of our agenda. One of the main engines of the world economy is our industry. As a result, not only do changes in the steel industry impact all other sectors, but they also come at a significantly higher cost than in other industries. Perhaps by making a few small changes, you can make a big impact in some industries towards sustainability. However, sustainability needs to be end-to-end for our industry. Yes, this comes at a very high cost, but the benefits are significant enough to serve as a model for other industries. Because of this, I believe that our shift will permanently alter the planet and establish sustainability. For our industry, I compare sustainability to riding a bicycle. You can't stay balanced and carry on with your journey unless you pedal. You cannot advance by stopping to refuel or by having someone push you from the outside. Thus, I can state that we are volunteers for sustainability as a company that has witnessed where sustainability can lead us over the last four to five years. We don't consider it to be a task or something we must complete. We volunteer to promote a better future and a sustainable way of life."

Oversees sustainability under three distinct areas of influence

Tosyalı Holding has prepared its sustainability strategy and roadmap in collaboration with expert organizations, with the participation of all stakeholders and consideration of global indices and international standards. The company recently published its sustainability report in accordance with GRI standards. Owing to these initiatives, Tosyalı Holding now oversees sustainability matters under three distinct impact areas: "Future of Business," "Carbon-Free Steel," and "Responsible Ecosystem Management."

Awarded certification as one of the carbon-lightest manufacturers

Tosyalı Holding engages in a wide range of activities, from using clean energy sources in production to transforming production processes with a focus on sustainability. It keeps up its efforts to use hydrogen with no carbon emissions and solar energy as a substitute for fossil fuels. The company obtained the International I-REC Certificate (Green Energy Certificate) some time ago to attest to the fact that the electricity it uses is produced from renewable sources. Additionally, Tosyalı certified that it is among the manufacturers with the lowest carbon footprint and obtained product-based EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) certificates in its ERW, Spiral, and hot rolled sheet facilities.

Chairman of Tosyalı Holding Fuat Tosyalı: "We will generate 50% of the electricity we use ourselves as a company with the largest rooftop SPP project in the world."

Declaring that their goal is to create a system in which fossil fuels are never used in the long run and that their production is centered on clean and renewable energy sources, "We have been investing in solar energy for a long time," stated Fuat Tosyalı. We will achieve a total installed capacity of 215 MW with our Tosyalı SPP project, which we launched last year, with the investment we realized in all of our facilities at the same time. With our rooftop power plants, we will also be the company with the largest rooftop SPP globally. This project will be the newest rooftop solar power plant installed with the most advanced technology in the world thanks to the purlin connection technique used during installation and the use of cutting-edge materials. However, with an annual production capacity of 250 million Kw/h, our project will be the largest rooftop solar power plant in the world. By the end of this year, we will have finished this project, which will allow us to produce steel in the cleanest and greenest way possible by averting about 182 million kg of carbon emissions. With an investment cost of $120 million, our project will be the largest rooftop solar energy project in the world. It is realized at a much lower cost than similar projects. We aim to use 50% of our total electricity consumption by 2025 to come from our own production through planned SPP investments. Our combined goal for renewable energy as Tosyalı is to install 2 Gwatts of power in the medium term."

"We aim to be the first steel company in our region and one of the few steel companies in the world that produces with hydrogen," stated Fuat Tosyalı, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tosyalı Holding.

Fuat Tosyalı declared that they had carried out their R&D studies and pilot trials and that they were using green hydrogen as the main energy source in production. By 2026, we want to run our Turkish facilities primarily on hydrogen. Conversely, when our fourth stage investments are finished, our second DRI plant in Tosyalı, Algeria, will be able to run entirely on hydrogen. Owned by a select few companies worldwide, Tosyalı Holding will be the first Turkish company to invest in this technology. The clean electricity we produce on our own will complement our target of producing electricity from renewable sources and help us achieve our goal of using green hydrogen. Our system has the ability to burn hydrogen and convert it into useful energy without compromising its high energy density. For this, electricity is required. For this hydrogen-focused process, we will utilize a portion of the electricity produced by the SPP that we have installed. Our goal is to become the first steel company in our region and among the select few in the world to produce using hydrogen through these investments."

Reduced carbon footprint by up to 70% through investments in innovation and technology

In order to meet its goals for producing steel that is carbon-free, Tosyalı Holding is also investing heavily in technology and innovation. With a focus on sustainability, Tosyalı Holding's $2.5 billion İskenderun Sarıseki investment in the İskenderun 2nd Organized Industrial Zone (OIZ) is set to open in the coming months. The facility will produce green steel that is qualified. With Industry 4.0 compliance, this facility, which makes use of the most cutting-edge technologies, will give Tosyalı Holding an advantage over competitors worldwide. With this facility, Tosyalı will also be the first in Turkey to utilize the less energy-consuming Quantum Furnace technology. This facility will be among the best in the world with its investments towards sustainability, having a carbon footprint 20% lower than conventional arc furnaces and 70% lower than blast furnaces.

Fuat Tosyalı, Chairman of the Board of Tosyalı Holding, "We consider climate-related risks and related actions as our top priority in our operational investments."

Noting that "Responsible Ecosystem Management" is one of our primary concerns when producing and investing, Fuat Tosyalı went on to say, "There are people, society, and the environment that we touch while producing, in other words, a huge ecosystem." For us, responsibility entails everything—air, water, and even the tiniest particle of dust. It is a fact that we must consider how to use all materials in production in a way that benefits the environment and society from the outset. Because of this, we are attempting to change the ecosystem, beginning with our own facilities, by working on a variety of projects ranging from energy and water efficiency to the circular economy. Supply chain, water risks and management, circular production, and responsible investments are some of the top concerns in this field. We communicate with our suppliers on a regular basis and involve them in the transition to sustainability. Our top focus for operational investments is mitigating the risks associated with climate change and taking appropriate action. We actively control carbon emissions and water hazards."

One of the leading circular economy companies worldwide, not just in Turkey

With Tosyalı Harsco, Tosyalı Holding, one of the world's leading companies in the field of circular economy, repurposes 1.2 million tons of waste slag into the economy. Slag, which is typically a waste material, can be used as a raw material and additive in a variety of industries, including construction, cement manufacturing, and asphalt road filling, thanks to the recycling process that is carried out at its facilities. Additionally, the company has set up a facility for the screening and cleaning of two million tons of scrap inside the Tosçelik Osmaniye plant. In the same facility, aluminum, stainless steel, and copper are also recovered from scrap. With its developed machines, Tosyalı Harsco also provides services to the industry by cleaning the slag underneath the furnace.

Uses the circular economy to use the air, water, and even dust.

In addition, Tosyalı creates a lot of projects pertaining to water efficiency, which is a vital topic in industry. By employing closed circuit systems and water cooling, it minimizes losses in its operations. It seeks to ensure resource efficiency and sustainable water use in two years by recovering sixty percent of the water used. Tosyalı has discovered a method that will add value over time, even for chimney dust. Reverse air is used to collect the dust from chimneys and collect it in filters. Zinc oxide is present in this flue dust at a percentage of 25% to 28%. The factories that make zinc receive this gathered flue dust. In addition, Tosyalı is constructing the world's first facility to separate the elements in flue dust using technology that produces no waste that harms the environment.

The company also plans to boost employee loyalty to 80% by the conclusion of this year.

"Encouraging artistic sustainability (Artist Residency Program) through the Artist in Residence Program"

The Tosyalı Holding, which has introduced schools, health facilities, and numerous other works to the community through its numerous socially beneficial projects, has recently begun to concentrate on sustainability in art. In accordance with this understanding, it supported the 100th birthday celebration of renowned sculptor İlhan Koman's exhibition at the 16th Contemporary Istanbul in 2021. Leading artists from Turkey and around the globe were invited to Contemporary Istanbul in 2022 as part of the "Artist in Residence Program." At the Tosyalı Holding facilities in Osmaniye, artists visited and chose the materials they would use to create their pieces. Art enthusiasts were able to view the captivating pieces made by artists using scrap and used iron and steel products at the 17th Contemporary Istanbul in September. Just in 2021, Tosyalı Holding set aside 248 million TL for social investments.
